Why Am I Missing Certain Regulations in FAR/AIM?

Some users believe that the FAR/AIM app is missing regulations. In reality, the content is there — but is hidden due to the use case filter you selected.

Why This Happens

When you first install the app, you are asked whether you want to:

  • View all regulations, or
  • Filter by use case (General Aviation, Flight Crew, Drone, or Mechanics)

This feature is important because Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations contains thousands of regulations, most of which are not relevant to every user. For example:

  • A drone pilot does not need to see regulations for airline transport pilots or aircraft mechanics.
  • A mechanic does not need to see the full body of drone regulations.
  • A student pilot working toward their private license may only need a small portion of the entire FAR/AIM set.

The filter allows you to focus only on the regulations most relevant to your area of operation.

The Common Mistake

At some point, you may search for a regulation that falls outside your chosen filter. Because the regulation is filtered out, it looks like it doesn’t exist in the app. Users sometimes forget they set a filter and assume the regulation is missing. But the regulation is there. It’s just filtered out.

How to Fix It

You can remove the filters to show all regulations in Settings:

  1. Open the app and go to Settings (tap the gear icon).
  2. Look at the Use Case section.
    • If All is selected, you’ll see the complete FAR/AIM.
    • If GA, FC, Drone, or MX is selected, you’ll only see that subset.
  3. To restore full access, select All.
Recommendation

If you’re unsure which option is best, we recommend selecting All. The downside is when browsing it may be more difficult to locate a specific regulation, but you can always return to a filtered view later or use the search function.
